I actually read later books in the series first, but found this at a used bookstore and grabbed it.  This is the first in the Night Huntress series and we learn all about Cat Crawfield, half vampire.  I had always seen her and Bones together, but in this one, they are not.  In fact, she is quote upset with him and bound and determined not to stay with him.  But there are bad guys to catch and she reluctantly accepts his help on a case.  Did I mention she works for the government exterminating vampires.  Did I also mention that Bones is a vampire?  Weird, huh?  For those people who enjoy Kim Harrison and Kelley Armstrong, you have to give Jeaniene Frost a shot.

This series has really become a bit stale, but it is still enjoyable for a quick read.  Zoey is no longer dead, but the problem of Neferet, the former Nix high priestess gone bad, is still there.   At the end of each book, I feel like a decision has been reached only to have it fall apart in the next book.  Unfortunately, this one was no different.  It seems like for every step forward Zoey and her friends make, they end up taking five steps back.  However, maybe I am being unfair.  After all, I do keep reading them.  I guess I would like to see more meat in the books.  Perhaps, though, I should just accept them for what they are…fluff.

Anita and Edward on the case of tracking a serial killer.  Unfortunately, local authorities are less than willing to let them take over.  What the locals don’t know is that the killers are the Harlequin, an elite band of assassins who answer to the Mother of All Darkness.  And Anita and Edward can’t tell them or they will be hunted themselves.  To speak their name is to invite death.

But Anita and Edward slowly put the pieces together and come up with a plan.  This means calling in help in the form of some of Anita’s gang and our friendly neighborhood psycho, Olaf.  Great pace and action in this one with a clear, decisive ending.  What was interesting was that Anita kept saying that she was getting tired of all the killing.  Could it be that Hamilton plans to bring this series to a close or is it only a ploy to spin off in another direction?  Only time will tell.
