Croak by Gina Damico

Lex used to be a straight A student. But now she is a juvenile delinquent. At the end of their wits, her parents decide to send her to stay with her Uncle Mort for the summer. She is pissed that she is being shipped off, but after only a day in her uncle’s company, she knows the summer will be anything but boring. Uncle Mort is a Grim Reaper and he is going to teach her to be one too. After she is paired up with another junior reaper, Lex learns what it is like to reap the souls of the dead. At first, it is difficult, but the more she does it, the less angry she feels and the more accepted she becomes in the community. This is a funny and irreverent teen fantasy novel that is a coming of age story in the truest sense of the word.

Those Greek Gods sure got around.  In this paranormal romance,  Casey finds out she is a misos, half human, half god.  Theron is an ancient warrior who is sent to bring her back to his kingdom where the descendants of the gods live and use her to save his fiancé, her sister, the future queen.  But Theron and Casey fall for each other immediately and he knows that he cannot carry out his duty.  Though it sounds a bit confusing, in the story, Naughton explains how the different races came to be.  This is the first in a series that deals with the descendants of the heroes of Greek (Theron is a descendant of Heracles).  A good, fast paced paranormal romance for those interested in Greek god type stories.

Very similar to Steve Berry and Dan Brown’s books, Medusa Amulet is about the quest for a magic amulet that gives the bearer immortality.  When a medieval scholar is given carte blacnhe by a mysterious rich woman to track it down for her, the hunt is on.  David Franco is a scholar though, and not an Indiana Jones type.  Or so he thinks.  Following clues, he flies all over the world to uncover a dark past.  Helped by a young woman he meets on his travels, he is soon dedicated to finding the amulet not only for his employer, but also for his sister who is dying of cancer.  With plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader interested, the Medusa Amulet delivers a fast paced action adventure with nods to history and art.

Thanks to Dana for recommending this awesome post-apocalyptic ya book to me.  It is not released until October, but it is bound to be incredibly successful.  Alex is a sullen teenager who is staying home alone for the weekend while his parents and sister go to visit his uncle’s house in Illinois.  But the day after they leave, disaster strikes.  A supervolcano in Yellowstone goes off and plunges the country into chaos.  At first, Alex stays with his neighbors after a part of volcanic rock destroys his house, but soon he makes up his mind to travel to Illinois to reach his family.  Along the way he meets people who help him and people who try to hurt him.  He ends up staying for a time at a farm where he meets Darla.  After a horrible accident, he and Darla take to the road together.  There are many challenges along the way, but you really see Alex grow as a person.  This is the first in a new series that is just as riveting as Pfeffer’s Life As We Knew It.  A must read for fans of post-apocalyptic fiction!
